You can have obstructive sleep apnea even if you don’t snore loudly or at all. If you wake unrefreshed, struggle with daytime sleepiness, or have witnessed breathing pauses, testing may help determine whether sleep apnea is involved.

Why Can Sleep Apnea Happen Without Snoring?

Snoring is the sound produced as air moves through a narrowed airway. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when throat tissues relax enough to partially or completely block airflow during sleep.

Cleveland Clinic explains that some people with obstructive sleep apnea have no audible snoring or only light, intermittent snoring. If you sleep alone, you may also be unaware that you snore.

What Are Other Sleep Apnea Symptoms?

Snoring is only one possible clue. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute lists breathing that starts and stops, gasping for air, daytime sleepiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, and insomnia among possible symptoms.

Watch for patterns such as:

  • waking up gasping or choking
  • witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
  • persistent daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • morning headaches, dry mouth, or frequent nighttime waking

These symptoms can have other causes, so they can’t diagnose sleep apnea on their own. If these patterns keep recurring, they deserve evaluation.

How Is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed If You Don’t Snore?

Sleep testing can confirm obstructive sleep apnea and show how severe it is. A home sleep apnea test may be appropriate for some adults, but the American Academy of Sleep Medicine says its appropriateness should be based on your medical history and an evaluation by a medical provider.

At Atlanta Sleep Apnea Treatment Center, we offer take-home sleep studies for sleep apnea testing in Atlanta. When appropriate, you can take the test home the same night as your consultation. A board-certified sleep physician analyzes the recorded data.

Home testing isn’t the right test for every patient. Your symptoms, medical history, and other health conditions can affect which type of sleep study is appropriate.

What Happens If Testing Confirms OSA?

Once OSA is diagnosed, treatment depends on the findings and your medical needs. Some patients may be candidates for oral appliance therapy, while others may need CPAP or another approach.

Dr. Wayne G. Suway is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and has provided dental care in the Atlanta and Marietta area for more than 30 years. He collaborates with physicians when providing oral appliance therapy for diagnosed sleep-related breathing disorders.

FAQ About Sleep Apnea Without Snoring

Can I have sleep apnea if nobody has heard me snore?
Yes. OSA can occur without loud or noticeable snoring.

Can fatigue alone mean I have sleep apnea?
No. Fatigue has many possible causes. Symptoms alone can’t establish an OSA diagnosis.

Can a dentist diagnose sleep apnea?
A dentist can identify risk factors and provide oral appliance therapy when appropriate, but a medical provider makes the OSA diagnosis using appropriate testing.
