What is Sleep Apnea? Atlanta, GA

Wayne G. Suway, DDS, MAGD, D.ABDSM

Sleep apnea is a condition that presents as pauses in breathing due to the throat muscles relaxing. When the airways are obstructed, the sufferer stops breathing for 10 to 30 seconds per episode. Sufferers of sleep apnea may experience up to 400 of these episodes every night. This condition often goes undiagnosed because most people have no awareness of symptoms.

In order to receive a diagnosis for sleep apnea, sufferers must first take part in a sleep study. The Atlanta Sleep Apnea Treatment Center can facilitate the diagnosis of several sleep disorders. Comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, acid reflux and depression are commonly linked to sleep apnea. Most sufferers also experience snoring between each episode of oxygen deprivation.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Patients who are diagnosed with sleep apnea may benefit from oral appliance therapy. The device helps to position the lower jaw in such a way that the airway remains unobstructed while sleeping. As a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM), Dr. Suway has the experience and skills needed to provide patients with effective treatment options.

In many cases, a conservative approach to treating sleep apnea is viable and effective. The patient may need to make recommended changes in diet and lifestyle. These steps can reduce symptoms dramatically and eliminate the need for oral appliance therapy. Dr. Suway creates treatment plans that are specifically designed to reflect the individual needs of his patients.

Your medical history, diet and lifestyle are all important considerations when treating obstructive sleep apnea. It is therefore important to have an honest discussion with Dr. Suway during a consultation at his Atlanta Sleep Apnea Treatment Center in Georgia.
